Genelle Harrell 1st
Welcome Ms. Harrell and Ms. Parker's SHINING STARS! Hello and welcome to all of my first graders and parents! My name is Genelle Harrell. I have one son who also attends R.N. Harris and he is an excited and proud 5th grader. I received my undergraduate degree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (Aggie Pride!) and my master's degree in literacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Go Tarheels!). I am looking forward to working with your child this year. We have lots of fun and exciting things to learn. Please feel free to contact me via written notes, phone messages or email. My email address is email@example.com. Let's get a headstart in READING so all students can be successful.... Parents, please help your child build their comprehension skills. This is a very important part of the reading process. The students in our class are excellent readers but as the stories become more challenging, remembering key points, the sequence of the stories as well as understanding what the story is all about, also becomes more challenging. Please note that students who can read a story must also be able to retell the story before moving to the next level. When you practice comprehension activities at home try the following ideas: 1. have your child close the book and retell the story from beginning to end 2. allow your child to rewrite the story in their own words 3. write key points from the story on strips of paper and ask your child to put the sentences in order (sequence) Please remind students the importance of class attendance, focusing during lessons and completing their work to the best of their ability. Lack of self control in the classroom doesn't only compromise their learning, but the learning of their classmates as well. I look forward to working with you!
