K. Jones, 2nd Grade Teacher

Folder Audra Goodman-5th
Greetings 5th grade seniors and parents!! We are quickly approaching the halfway point. RN Harris' proficiency goal for all subjects is 85%. To meet this goal we need your help in ensuring students come to class prepared. This includes having all materials such as: pencils, notebooks, textbooks/workbooks, high lighters, and paper. We are going into 3rd nine weeks and supplies need to be replenished. In order to prepare our "seniors" for middle school it is important that they bring their agenda book home and back to school each day. The agenda books are an excellent way to communicate with your child's teacher. It is also a great way to keep up with homework assignments, field trips, early release, DPS tests, and Eagle Bucks. Please note that your child should always be a Soaring Eagle. If their bucks are below $17.00 please speak with them concerning Soaring Eagle behavior. It is very important that students are reading 30 minutes nightly and getting their reading logs signed . In addition to homework it is important that students review a subject and strategy each night. This will provide them with much needed review for the End Of Grade Test in science, math, and reading.

Folder Natasha Norins 5th
We are preparing diligently for the End of Grade tests. Please be sure to sign your child's agenda, and look for special dates listed. The EOG's begin May 20th. Each minute in school should be focused and rigorous, which means all students should show SOARing actions and behaviors. The end of the year is exciting for our 5th graders, but much more work is still in store for us. If you are looking for specialized samples of this year's EOG here is a link to the NC DPI site of accountability: http://www.ncpublicschools.org/accountability/testing/releasedforms If you have questions feel free to email me at natasha.norins@dpsnc.net

Folder Mary Harris 3rd
Hello! My name is Mary Harris. I will be your son or daughters 3rd grade teacher for the 2011-2012 school year. This will be my third year at RN Harris. I really enjoyed my 2 years at this wonderful school and I am looking forward to starting year three. I have always wanted to be a teacher. When I was in elementary school, we had a career day. This was a day where we dressed up as what we wanted to be when we grew up. I wore a dress with an A+ button with a book and pencil in my hand. I have been inspired by many teachers and was pushed through my entire academic career to be better and more successful. I graduated from Meredith College in Raleigh. I earned my Bachelors Degree in child development and a K-6 license. I enjoy music, art and just about anything that involves teaching. I am excited and anxious to begin working with your children. I plan to not only watch them grow as students, but also grow with them. We are going to have a great time in this classroom and I hope that all of you can participate in the growth of the children and this class. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I really look forward to getting to know you and your children.

Welcome Back, Its 2013! I am so excited to get the students prepared for 2nd grade. During the remainder of this quarter and the school year many factors will play an important part in our childs' education. A few reminders: 1) Read daily and record the books on the reading log:(check homework folder) 2) Check agenda for homework/spelling and communication from me 3) Communicate by signing the agenda book that the student has completed the work. (If you have any questions please communicate using the parent section of the agenda book) 4) Ask your child daily about what they are learning in school. 5) Remind students to stay on task throughout the school day and rememeber to SOAR (Show self-control, Offer Peer Support, Actively Listen and Learn, Respect Everyone.) This is key to students learning and retaining as much as possible during instructional time.

Folder Genelle Harrell 1st
Welcome Ms. Harrell and Ms. Parker's SHINING STARS! Hello and welcome to all of my first graders and parents! My name is Genelle Harrell. I have one son who also attends R.N. Harris and he is an excited and proud 5th grader. I received my undergraduate degree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (Aggie Pride!) and my master's degree in literacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Go Tarheels!). I am looking forward to working with your child this year. We have lots of fun and exciting things to learn. Please feel free to contact me via written notes, phone messages or email. My email address is genelle.harrell@dpsnc.net. Let's get a headstart in READING so all students can be successful.... Parents, please help your child build their comprehension skills. This is a very important part of the reading process. The students in our class are excellent readers but as the stories become more challenging, remembering key points, the sequence of the stories as well as understanding what the story is all about, also becomes more challenging. Please note that students who can read a story must also be able to retell the story before moving to the next level. When you practice comprehension activities at home try the following ideas: 1. have your child close the book and retell the story from beginning to end 2. allow your child to rewrite the story in their own words 3. write key points from the story on strips of paper and ask your child to put the sentences in order (sequence) Please remind students the importance of class attendance, focusing during lessons and completing their work to the best of their ability. Lack of self control in the classroom doesn't only compromise their learning, but the learning of their classmates as well. I look forward to working with you!
Folder Daphane Sigman 1st

I'm looking forward to developing young minds for the 21st century and beyond.

Folder Agnes Raynes Media Specialist
Parents, I have started using Edmodo, an educational social network community tool with 4th and 5th graders. They can write notes about educational subjects. In media class, we will do our class projects, quizzes and tests using Edmodo. Welcome Back, R.N. Harris Parents and Students This is Mrs. Agnes Raynes with a few notes from our Virtual Media Center: Many of you know that our new library is under construction and will open later this year. All of our books are in storage, so students cannot check out books. I have created a virtual library where students, teachers and parents can access online books and other resources. Students will be able to read ebooks by themselves and/or listen to others read to them. They may also do online activities to help them become better readers. Parents, I am encouraging you to go to Durham Public Library and sign you and your children up for library cards. It is free and it will allow your children to check out books, videos, music CD's, etc. There are many other free activities for your whole family at the public library: children story hour in English and Spanish, video game competitions, drawing classes, holiday craft classes, etc. On Early Release days, the library has activities that your students can do. They have adult computer classes, science activities and so may other free special programs. There is a Durham Public Library near your home and you can also visit the main library downtown off of Roxboro road. Media classes will be held in the computer lab until the media center is ready. I am excited that I will be able to help the students explore the many resources that are on the internet and will teach them how to use it. I ask that you explain to your child the importance of taking good care of the computers. Students who do not follow proper operating procedures will lose some computer time. I'm looking forward to a great year! Thanks,

Teacher: Mrs. Patricia Williams School: R.N. Harris Integrated Arts/ Core Knowledge Magnet School Class: Academically/Intellectually Gifted Dear Parents, Welcome Back! I eagerly anticipate a wonderful school year with you and your child. Thank you for entering this partnership with me to make this a spectacular year. We will be exploring carefully selected, challenging works of literature from various times, cultures, and genres. Students will research issues relevant to their own lives and make interdisciplinary connections. In the area of mathematics, my goal is to help your child grow in his or her ability to communicate as a mathematician and in the process become a better problem solver. Parents can encourage their children to be interested in learning. Concepts, skills, and activities that are being learned at school need to be reinforced, reviewed, and discussed at home regularly. As a parent or guardian, your involvement in your child's education is the most important factor in your child's success in school. We will come to school each day prepared to teach and learn together.
